My name is Tracy Leary, mom to Erin Leary who has been doing extra maths at Mind over Maths since July 2023.

Lucy has been attending Mind Over Maths since the second term this year for 2 hours a week.
Her maths marks have gone up from 51% in March to 87% at the end of the third term.
She is able to focus on whatever part of the maths curriculum is being taught at her school.
She enjoys the quiet, unpressured atmosphere where she can focus on her problems without distraction and get guidance from the tutors.
The tutors are approachable and able to explain clearly without making her feel inadequate.
Not all children learn at the same rate or in the same way and this is a system that is working extremely well for Lucy.

Luke joined Mind Over Maths at the end of Term 1 with a maths mark of 33% and a cycle test mark of 29%.
After spending a month with Richard, 2 hours a week, he wrote a cycle test and got 69%.
At the end of Term 2 he got 74% for maths overall.
Luke absolutely loves his sessions and finds the environment very calming.

When my daughter started at Mind Over Maths in March 2022 it was a last-ditch attempt to help her with Maths before allowing her to change to Maths Lit.
Having been for Maths lessons elsewhere, I didn’t hold out much hope.
One term later and her Maths mark has gone from 54% to 74%.
More significantly though is how much her attitude towards Maths has changed.

I love Mind over Maths as the name suggests it gets your mind over Maths.
At Mind over Maths you can work at your own pace which is different to class Maths.
They help in trying to find easier and quicker methods as well as focusing on what you struggle with which then leads to you improving in your performance.
Mind over Maths has helped me immensely as I used to get 40 – 60%, but now I’m scoring 80% and above.
I highly recommend them for those who want to achieve their personal A+.
In my son’s grade 11 year he got very low Maths marks for his June exams (40%). His previous results were seldom below 70% and often higher.
He was left feeling very unsure of himself and not sure what to do.
It seems his gaps and issues were more from the Covid year of 2020.
I had to make a quick decision re what to do as he appeared to need personal attention to sort out where his gaps of understanding and knowledge were and at the same time relate this to the IEB syllabus.
I felt this was beyond the duty of his school Maths teacher and started looking for a tutor. Mind over Maths came highly recommended.
Richard assured us that he could assess Rafael’s gaps and give him the help he needed.
Rafael quickly started to enjoy Maths again and needed no convincing to go to his tutoring sessions.
He achieved an 85% aggregate for his November exam papers and has been able to start Grade 12 motivated and with his confidence back.
The encouragement and support from Mind over Maths allows Rafael the energy to focus on other school subjects and not ‘worry’ about Maths.

In primary school we tried various tutors with hardly any improvement in Ethan’s maths marks.
The situation was heading for disaster until we approached Richard.
We found Mind over Maths on the internet.
Thankfully, his attendance led to a vast improvement of 44% in his maths from Grade 7 to Grade 8, higher than the class average.

“Mind over Maths has helped me understand math with enthusiasm, clarity and precision.
Every lesson is practice and revision but, at the same time, there is always time for a good conversation before settling down.
There are different exercises each lesson and they pay good attention when it comes to your weaknesses.
They won’t provide random homework like some places, it is based on what you don’t know and helps you understand what you’re doing.
They have helped me get ahead in my class and have raised my positivity when it comes to explaining work to my classmates.
That’s a tremendous bonus because now I can truly understand my work and take pride in my work.

Matthew came home at the end of the June exams 2021 with 30% for Maths.
We had tried 2 previous Maths tutoring places and neither had really worked for him.
I had heard about Mind Over Maths and, now desperate to increase his marks for Matric, thought we would give them a try.
Richard and his team are wonderful.
By December 2021 Matthew’s mark was up to 47% and this first term of 2022 he got 71% on his report. The first time since he has been in high school that he finally reached his goal.
I would gladly recommend Richard and his team, they seem to take an individual interest in each child.

In Primary school I was getting 80% for Maths each term, but when I went to High school my Maths mark dropped into the 30’s in the first term. Unfortunately last year Covid hit and we went into Lockdown.
Online schooling was very challenging and I could not make up for the basics which I had lost in the Grade 8 foundation.
My mom saw an advert for Mind over Maths and we decided to give them a try. My Maths mark went from 34% to 67% at the end of Grade 8 and 84% for the first term of Grade 9!
I really enjoy being taught by Richard because he is patient and takes the time to explain Maths in a way that I easily understand. He is very helpful and kind.
Mind over Maths has helped me so much and I’m so grateful to them and Richard for giving me back my confidence and love of Maths!
I happened to come across the MIND OVER MATHS signage whilst driving through the Blue Route Mall parking. At that stage, I could never have imagined the role that Richard and his team would have played in my and my son’s life.
We were fast approaching the middle of the fourth term and my son had failed maths in all previous terms. In a desperate attempt to salvage any kind of hope of passing, I enrolled my son for some intensive sessions with the maths tutoring team.
I was optimistic, but not unrealistic – seeing that we’ve come for help so late in the year. But earlier in this month I received a call from my son’s school maths teacher…When I got the call I could only think the worst.
It turned out that it was good news…the teacher contacted me to congratulate us!!!! Asher got the second highest mark in his class!!!! He really could not have achieved this without the help of the MIND OVER MATHS team! Such an amazing investment in my son’s education!

I have been going to Richard since 2015 and it has paid off. Before I started going to Mind over Maths I was getting 40% – 50% for tests and as my average. When my doctor (Dr Goldberg at Medicross) suggested that I try and go to Richard it was the best decision I made. I now consistently get between 70% – 85% for my tests and between 75% – 85% average.
It is a very comfortable environment to work in and the tutors are very kind and always willing to help. My daughter, Kelley, has always been struggling with Mathematics and I have always sat with her and helped where I can. During the Covid-19 lockdown period online and blended learning was employed at school which disrupted her learning experience. She could not easily assimilate or internalize the work given to her.
While her general average in Mathematics was 40 – 50%, it had then dropped to 30% which was of great concern to us as parents. As a working parent I do not necessarily possess the required skills to tutor Kelley in Mathematics and therefore needed to turn to professionals for assistance.
We approached Richard for assistance and as an instructor he had immediately set us all at ease by his engaging methods. Kelley seemed more interested in improving her grades and was more comfortable with the instruction she had received. We were ecstatic to see her prospering under the tutelage that she received.
Even though we have to travel quite a distance for Kelley to attend the classes, as parents we feel that this is well worth the effort seeing the work that was put in to assist Kelley in her understanding and engagement of the subject.
She has been with Richard since Term 2 and in Term 3 during which she managed to score a 90% average. We knew that there would be some improvement in her marks, but we were pleasantly surprised by her growth in the subject. We can only ascribe this accomplishment to the hard work that Richard has put in to help Kelley toward academic success.

I felt I needed to send a special thanks by mail to your amazing team!
From my very first communication to the great improvement in my son’s Maths, I have been completely blown away.
I made contact with Mind over Maths the end of August and Joshua started in September, which was just before the end of term 3. I think with the extremely busy curriculum and all the bits of extras our children need to get through in a school day, the reality of it is that sometimes we as parents need to put the extra in to benefit our children. My son came home with marks as low as 50% and his self esteem was pretty low when handing his papers to me to sign. This is when I realised it was time to find some assistance as I could not see him feel this way.
We were allocated 2 lessons a week and Joshua has worked extremely hard to improve his marks. We have had the best experience from your team. From the patience and flexibility to the quick messages to alert Maria of my concerns and areas I felt he needed to work on for a test. Without hesitation it would be done. Joshua would come home from each lesson feeling so confident.
In term 4, just a few weeks after working with Maria, we had our first test and Joshua got a whopping 72%! At first I thought it was just by luck, but this was definitely not the case as he had two Maths exams two weeks ago and his marks were 79%.
Not only has his Maths improved, but his focus has been so much better overall that in many of his exams he got between 80 and 90% which really pleased me so much!

Isaac O has been attending Mind Over Maths for just a few months now and Richard and his team have done a sterling job in helping him to understand and improve his Maths results.
Isaac got 77% for his final Maths exam for term 2 this year….I almost fell out of my chair!!!

James has been attending Mind Over Maths since January 2019. He is absolutely LOVING his lessons and enjoys the maths support he is getting by attending lessons twice a week.
In truth it has transformed James’s relationship with the subject as he often felt defeated in maths class and would give up easily during tests.
He assumed that he did not have the ability to grasp concepts and understand the work and this resulted in him failing maths in Grade 6.
He is now achieving results of over 80% consistently and his class teacher says it is really encouraging to see that he believes in himself again and is now engaging in class, enjoying maths and successfully completing his tests.
We are so encouraged as parents. Sometimes it is just about finding the right combination/support for your child.

Tylan has been at Mind over Maths for just over a year now as she was struggling in Grade 7 at Wynberg Girls Junior School when her average Maths percentage was as low as 32%.

Aidan Cameron Mulholland started at Mind over Maths 1 year ago. His Grade 11 Maths mark for Term 2 was 51%. When we first sat down with Richard he told us that other pupils had improved quite a lot. I was extremely impressed, but I didn’t think that Aidan would go up 20% in 1 year. He got 71% for Term 2 in his Matric year and he can only do better for his final exams.

Thank you for all your hard work with Hannah and Olivia over the last year. Since Hannah started with you in January 2016 her marks have improved from around 50% to hovering between 70% – 80% and as she enters Grade 11 next year I am sure she will continue to benefit from your excellent tuition.
Her term marks for 2016 have been 74%, 72% and 76%.
Olivia was really struggling with Maths at the beginning of Grade 9 this last January with marks in the mid 40’s and has also managed to generally raise her marks by between 25 and 35% and actually got 90% for her last test! She has now chosen to take Maths as a Matric subject as she goes into Grade 10 in 2017 – something we would not have considered previously.

My daughter, Mikki, is in Grade 7 and has been tutored by Maria at Mind over Maths twice a week since end of Grade 5.
When Mikki started with Maria her Maths grade was 66%. Her Maths grades now consistently reach the 80th and 90th percentile.
Maria is calm, consistent and encouraging and it is this that has built up Mikki’s confidence and made Maths her favourite subject. It is the consistent revision and explanation of key concepts and the fact that Maria tries to keep just slightly ahead of the syllabus being taught at school that makes Mind over Maths so effective.
The monthly report back gives me assurance that Maria knows exactly the areas that require attention.
As a parent I feel confident that my child is always up to date with and has a fundamental understanding of her Maths. The system requires commitment in that the tutoring lessons should be made a priority and the small amount of homework given needs to be completed.
I highly recommend Mind over Maths as a reliable method to drastically improve and maintain good Maths grades and Mikki will continue indefinitely even though she is now achieving excellent grades.
Kayla started attending Bergvliet High School in January 2014. During the first three terms her test and exam results averaged between 27% – 30%.
We were then introduced to Mind Over Maths via a friend by the name of Tammy Williams. Her niece Kelly attended the extra lessons with amazing results.

What an amazing find! I am so very happy that I stumbled upon Mind Over Maths a year ago after a very stressful end of term meeting with Joshua’s class teacher. Joshua’s Math mark was at 33% and we were told that if this mark does not drastically improve by the end of the next term, he would fail Grade 5.
Well, I contacted Richard at M.O.M that very day and lucky for us they had a slot open for Josh during the winter holidays. Maria worked with Josh extensively and his Math mark improved considerably and he passed Grade 5. We stuck with M.O.M and at the end of this year’s second term Josh’s Math mark is now standing on 67%!
We are ever so grateful to Maria and the M.O.M team for helping Josh understand the concepts often lost in the school classroom. We look forward to seeing his love of the subject and confidence in it grow with each week that goes by.
My daughter started at Mind over Maths in October 2014 in grade 8. At that stage we thought she would fail the grade as she had failed Maths in all three terms and got 28% in her last report, but after 1 month of lessons she passed. At the end of 2015 she passed her Maths with 66%. For the first term of 2016 she achieved 78% and for the second term 84%.
It is just amazing the progress that she has made during her time at Mind over Maths. She enjoys her classes and does not even complain with regards to the little bit of extra homework. She finds the lessons helpful and gets angry with me if we have to reschedule or cancel a lesson.
Joe has had lessons with Maria at Mind Over Maths since the middle of grade 5.
I decided to put him into Mind Over Maths not because his Maths mark was bad, but because he started struggling with his Maths homework and I felt I was confusing him rather than being a help when trying to assist him.
I also know that having an older sibling the Maths just gets harder and harder in high school.
I wanted to be assured that he had all the basics in order to keep up with the high standard of high school Maths.
In grade 7 he is now getting 89%. I am certain that Maria has prepared him for this. She is a kind, patient and very determined tutor and Joe always feels very comfortable with her which is important. His marks reflect this.
Lucy is a Grade 5 pupil and is absolutely loving her lessons at Mind Over Maths. She finds Maria’s teaching methods extremely helpful and easy to understand.
Lucy started In January this year with her Maths marks between 60-70%. She has just achieved an 85% mark in her June exams at school which we are all thrilled about.
Although both of my girls don’t struggle with Maths, new concepts are sometimes hard to grasp in a classroom environment. I feel that having more individualised attention helps cement the understanding of these new concepts and helps them to achieve great marks in Maths.

I went onto the website for a Maths tutor in the area and Mind over Maths was on my list. My daughter got the support she needed in her struggle with Maths.

Anne needed our help in her Grade 8 year when she was getting 55%. As Grade 8 is such an important year, we targeted all the important sections first and this resulted in Anne achieving her highest mark in a very long time (88%). She was ecstatic and is still getting marks in the high 70’s in her current Grade 10 year.
2008 did not start off well for Zarine. She hated Maths with a passion because she struggled to understand the work. At the end of 2007 she only achieved 22% for Maths. Mind Over Maths was not my first choice, but after a referral from a previous student of Mind Over Maths and a friend of mine I decided to send Zarine for lessons. I was very worried because I knew that she was not allowed to drop Maths. After my first phone call to Richard, I immediately got confidence in Mind Over Maths and even though Zarine was in tears because of the workload, her marks improved to 51% in two and a half months!
I made a deal with Zarine: For every 5 % increase, I will reward her. Now it seems I have to reward her all the time! When we talk about Maths now, she laughs and smiles with confidence.

She came to you at the end of the first term with a Maths mark of 41%. By the second term her mark had increased to 53% and by the third term it was up to 63%. During the third term she also wrote 2 tests for which she got 97% and 93% respectively – the highest Maths marks in grade 12. This is a huge achievement which she would not have been able to achieve without the backing of Mind Over Maths. She is aiming for at least 70% for her final mark and both her and I are confident that she will achieve it.

We cater for different types of students at our centre. Michelle was a high-achieving student who wanted to improve her Maths mark and aim for an A. She started with us on 66% and has achieved her goal very quickly. Her latest mark was close to 90%!

Tarryn started with us on around 40% and mentioned that her whole class was failing. After attending 2 weeks of our individual lessons, she was able to get 67% for her test! Her average is now around the 70% mark and will continue with lessons in her Matric year in 2010.
Mrs. Pengelly contacted us after hearing about our successes with other students from this school. Mitch started with us on about 50% and after just a few weeks Mrs. Pengelly had this to say: “His spirits seem to be high as he lifts his level of competency. It’s wonderful to see Mitch improving his marks so quickly!” Mitch is now getting close to 80%.

My marks were usually in the region of a D and would occasionally slip below 50%. Once I started with Richard my marks and understanding immediately began to improve. I found the environment much more relaxed and there was always a tutor on hand to assist with problems, where as at home I was forced to struggle through on my own. I would receive help with my homework and would work through extra examples from my textbook and other sources.
For my mocks in matric I achieved a high B and with more work and help I was able to push it up to an A for my finals.

We have found that Mind Over Maths has helped David tremendously. David is quite shy and would never stick his hand up in class and ask for help. He likes the individual attention and he likes all the tutors as well.
Going for the lessons has given him so much confidence and every time I fetch him, he has a look of satisfaction on his face. It makes it all worthwhile. Last year he was failing Maths and now he is passing, which is great and for the first time last week, after studying for a Maths test, he came to me and said, I know I can do Maths, which is a first, he has always had negative thoughts about Maths.

April 2007 was ek op moed verlore vlakte en het besef dat ek hulp nodig gehad het om my wiskunde punte dringend te verbeter. Ek het vanaf ‘n vriendin uitgevind van “Mind Over Maths” en toe Richard van den Wijngaerd geskakel.
Ek wil hiermee my dank uitspreek vir die goeie gehalte van onderrig wat ek ontvang het gedurende die tyd wat ek klasse bygewoon het by “Mind Over Maths”. Richard was altyd vriendelik en baie professioneel en ek kon enige tyd vir hom vrae vra oor enige wiskunde somme wat hy vir my deeglik verduidelik het en help verstaan het. Wat “Mind Over Maths” so uniek gemaak het vir my is die feit dat elke student ‘n persoonlike tutor het.
Ek wil hiermee afsluit en my persoonlike dank aan Richard gee en ook byvoeg danksy sy goeie onderrig ek ‘n goeie slaagpunt in Wiskunde behaal het en ook hierdie jaar verder kan gaan studeer.
I started going to “Mind Over Maths” in March 2007. The tutors welcomed me on my first visit and started to find my problem areas.
The tutors started with relaying the basic foundations of the syllabus. This helped me to understand work from previous years and made a notable difference in my ability to solve more complicated problems in Mathematics.
They were always available to help and monitor the individual’s problem areas. The extra lessons forced me to do more studying before tests and exams.The extra past papers showed me the standard expected and gave me the experience of writing a matric paper.
A few weeks before the exams I decided to have extra lessons for Science. The tutors accommodated my needs and I was able to have some extra practise before my exams.
“Mind Over Maths” helped me to achieve a high “B” for both Mathematics and Physical Science on Higher Grade.
I strongly recommend “Mind Over Maths” for anyone who is struggling at Maths or Science or who would like to improve their marks.
When I started at Mind Over Maths in January 2007, I had a Maths mark of 58 %. During the course of that 2007 year, I attended many extra lessons in which Richard & Michelle would assist me. Wherever I had a problem or difficulty understanding any concepts they would help me and explain it to me in the simplest way they could until I understood it perfectly.
They would also give me easier tips and methods which would help me not to make any silly mistakes in tests and exams. They sacrifice much of their time to help the students which attend their lessons and they are a great asset to us. The monthly reports which are sent home to the parents are also very useful as these highlight the students’ weak areas, both for the student as well as for the parents and where the student is coping and where not. This points out areas that might need more practice at home.
The environment at Mind Over Maths is warm and friendly and with the help of the above-mentioned people I was able to attain an overall Maths mark of 81 % at the end of my Matric year after the final exams. I express a great amount of gratitude towards these people and am very grateful for all their help. I would recommend anyone who is having trouble with Maths or English to attend the extra lessons offered at Mind Over Maths, if they are willing to work hard, as they will reap the benefits in the end.
Dear Richard and Team
Since a young age Lee had one dream and that was to be an IT specialist – there was never a second choice for him. In primary school he excelled in Maths but his marks took a serious dive in high school to the point where the highest mark he got in Grade 10 was 16%. His teachers advised that he needed to change to Maths Literacy, but he wouldn’t give up on his dream.
I enrolled him with Mind over Maths and what happened in the years to come was truly amazing! His average went from 16% to over 50% throughout his high school career passing Grade 12 with over 60% in Core Maths.
Today he is in an IT programme doing extremely well, studying and working in the Government sector and well on his way to realizing that dream.
None of this would have been possible if not for the team at Mind over Maths, their hard work, dedication and believing in Lee – this turned his life around. They not just made sure he passed Grade 12 well, they secured a bright future for him and for that I could never thank them enough.
