Some parents might think that extra maths tuition is just an added expense on top of school and extramural fees, but in fact it’s an investment in giving your child the edge in a very competitive world.
Our maths tutoring is geared towards two different types of students – those who are struggling to keep up at school and whose marks have dropped, as well as those who manage well but would like to maintain their marks or excel further. Students in both groups need to make use of every available resource to achieve their goals.
Richard has 18 years experience teaching students with different capabilities and treats each one as an individual according to their unique needs. He has successfully helped students with various learning difficulties and challenges to not only better their results but, more importantly, to build confidence in themselves.
Through the years we’ve become well-versed in what works and what doesn’t and we’re able to adapt our teaching methods to the specific needs of each student. We like to teach shorter and easier methods wherever possible.
We encourage our students to ask questions as we work, which can sometimes be intimidating to do at school in a large class. Our Maths tutors develop a rapport with each student which gives them the confidence to speak out.
It’s essential to follow a school-specific syllabus in order for students to be able to stay on top of their current school work and perform well in class tests and exams. Each school covers different sections of work at different times and at different paces, so structuring lessons accordingly is very important.
We’ve had students start extra Math tuition with us in primary school and continue right through high school to Grade 12. The earlier we can start putting the pieces together the better and we focus on cementing a strong foundation from the first lesson.
Through our tutoring, we’re able to pick up and target problem areas from previous grades as well as current issues as they come up. We revisit and re-explain concepts when necessary until the student has a good grasp of them. We fill in the gaps until they are back on track and able to cope with their current school work.
As part of our learning support, we guide students through their school homework, which makes it less stressful, less of a chore and more of an effective learning experience.
Many students have difficulty studying for tests and exams, so the preparation we do during lessons makes this task more manageable and helps them to perform better. We work on time management, correct layout of answers and helping them to recognise which approach to use and when, as many struggle with these skills.
Feedback is vital to each student’s academic performance and primarily takes the form of monthly progress reports. We encourage an open flow of communication as we believe that parents need to be kept in the loop with regards to their child’s successes as well as any issues that need to be addressed. In this way we can work together to help the student grow.
We offer a positive, relaxed work environment which encourages learning and we work closely with our students which enables us to see and nurture their potential. We’ve often found that improved math marks result in greater confidence, which has a domino effect on their performance in their other subjects and attitude towards their school work in general.
